Conservation

C+W O’Brien Architects embraces Ireland’s rich and diverse architectural heritage, as well as global influences. Our approach to design and conservation reflects a deep respect for history while ensuring functionality and sustainability.

We are committed to preserving the character of historic buildings through a meticulous, informed conservation strategy. Our principles include:

Minimal intervention – Retaining as much of the original structure as possible with minimal changes.

Repair over replacement – Prioritizing restoration to maintain authenticity.

Transparency in alterations – Ensuring all repairs and modifications are clearly distinguishable.

Collaborating with expert specialists, we conduct measured surveys to document and analyze existing architectural elements. Our conservation approach aligns with RIAI best practice recommendations, incorporating in-depth research and assessment. Additionally, we provide comprehensive conservation reports and strategic evaluations to support the adaptive reuse of historic buildings and protected structures in both the public and private sectors.

A recent example of our work is the transformation of historic buildings on Ormond Quay into Ormond Locke Aparthotel. The Georgian and Victorian structures, listed on Dublin City Council’s Record of Protected Structures, required sensitive renovation and extension. Our involvement included conservation analysis, strategic design, and site operations to ensure the successful revitalization of this landmark on Dublin’s North Quays.
