The Maryville House development in Portlaoise combines historical preservation with modern urban design. Located on a 0.39-hectare site next to Portlaoise Train Station, the project includes restoring the protected Maryville House, built in 1855. Alongside this, two four-storey residential blocks will be constructed. These new buildings will be connected to the historic house via glazed single-storey links. The development will offer 32 two-bedroom apartments, including four within the restored Maryville House. A 673 sqm landscaped communal area enhances the space, providing a vibrant environment for future residents.
The design prioritizes accessibility and sustainability. It includes 90 bicycle spaces and 20 car parking spots to support sustainable transport. Additionally, the landscaping features accessible paths, seating areas, and compliance with Part M of the Building Regulations, ensuring inclusivity for all. The design also incorporates passive surveillance, pedestrian permeability, and soft landscape boundaries. These elements balance privacy for residents while encouraging connectivity with public spaces.
Architecturally, the development respects the heritage of Maryville House while introducing a complementary modern aesthetic. The new buildings frame the historic house, keeping it as a focal point. The materials and design harmonize with the site’s character. Dual-aspect apartments and flexible layouts cater to diverse living needs. Green Pine Consultants’ landscaping plan bridges the old and new, combining historical garden elements with modern recreational spaces for socializing and relaxation.
In summary, the Maryville House development blends historical preservation, urban design, and community features. It sets a benchmark for sustainable, high-density residential projects in urban areas, revitalizing a culturally significant site while showcasing modern architectural best practices.
