The site, previously known as the Zanzibar bar and nightclub, plays a key role in the historic Quays area. Over time, it fell into disrepair and remained vacant for several years. Before redevelopment, it stood as the only unused property on Ormond Quay Lower, located between the Millennium Bridge and Ha’penny Bridge. The property extends from Ormond Quay Lower to the south, Strand Street Great to the north, and is surrounded by existing buildings on the east and west.
The redevelopment project involved refurbishing the Protected Façade and interior of the existing Georgian buildings along the quays, following best preservation practices. It also introduced a new bar and eatery. An existing archway, accessed from the Quays, serves as the main entrance to a stunning foyer, which leads into a new 160-bedroom Aparthotel. This addition brings a much-needed facelift to Strand Street Great.
The project reached completion in the fourth quarter of 2020.
